Understanding GLP-1 Dosing

Start Low, Go Slow

GLP-1 medications start at low doses and gradually increase. This helps minimize side effects like nausea.

Weekly Injections

Most GLP-1s are injected once weekly on the same day. Liraglutide (Saxenda/Victoza) is taken daily.

Side Effects

Nausea is most common during dose increases. It typically improves as your body adjusts.

GLP-1 Titration Schedules Explained

Why Start at a Low Dose?

Starting at a low dose allows your body to adjust to the medication. The most common side effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) are most intense during the first few weeks and typically improve as your body gets used to the medication.

When to Increase Your Dose

  • Dose increases typically occur every 4 weeks
  • Your doctor may delay increases if you're experiencing significant side effects
  • You may stay at a lower dose if it's working well for you
  • Not everyone needs to reach the maximum dose

What If I Miss a Dose?

Weekly injections (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound): If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip that dose and take your next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses at once.

Daily injections (Saxenda, Victoza): If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose.
